The second most important announcement for South Africa after FIFA World Cup 2010In the rest of the world (outside Canada and the U.S.), soccer seems to be an incredibly popular sport. As a North American, I don't understand any game played without a large amount of protective gear and cheerleaders, so you'll have to excuse me for my ignorance. David Beckham? He plays soccer, right? He's married to Posh Spice. That's about all I know. ANYWAY - South Africa is hosting the FIFA World Cup 2010 in 9 host cities, and one great way to keep track of how your team…

In my previous BlackBerry® Theme Studio post, I explained the main features and tools of new version 5.0. Now that you have this information under your belt, the process for creating a BlackBerry theme is pretty easy. I suggest you download BlackBerry Theme Studio v5.0 and have the software open as you read along. Let's get started! Step 1: Make your theme assets. Design your icons, backgrounds and other theme images in your favorite design tool - Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro, BlackBerry® Composer etc. For fun, I've designed a new background image for my theme:Step 2:… -

BlackBerry App World: Everything you wanted to know and weren’t afraid to ask (Part Two)
The Inside BlackBerry commenting system suffered through an error over the weekend, making it impossible for our dear readers to submit new questions in response to part one of my Everything you wanted to know about BlackBerry App World™ post. Thankfully, I was able to "surf the Internet" and find some BlackBerry App World questions that need answering. Thank you, Internet! I've read lots of questions from BlackBerry® smartphone users about when BlackBerry App World will be available in their countries. Liquid Chrome Premium Theme Now Available For $3.99 With Updated Support For 5.0 Devices
20 Nov 2009 | 9:19 amIn my hunting for a new theme for my 9700 last night I came across Liquid Chrome. Liquid Chrome is one of the new theme builder 5.0 themes that are now starting to show up, practically on a hourly basis in the theme shop. While I'm not typically a fan of yellow, the transitions in Liquid chrome caught my eye enough to give it a shot and I have to say I don't mind yellow so much any more. The theme developer, Jake has taken the time to make sure all the transistions flow nicely throughout the theme and let's face it that wallpaper is just plain cool. Liquid chrome has a full hidden dock and…

BlackBerrys and Bulldogs: Proven Durability
15 Nov 2009 | 12:32 pmJust minutes ago I returned from a friend’s house, a friend who happens to own three bulldogs. Now, I’ve visited these dogs before and have never had a problem, in fact they’re some of the nicest dogs I’ve met. However, throw a BlackBerry with a dog whistle into the mix and you’ve got a problem. I can’t say exactly what prompted me to test out my dog whistle app at that point in time. But for some reason, I took out my BlackBerry and started messing around with different whistles. Immediately the dogs starting going crazy, grunting, groaning, and howling. But what came next I did… -
Storm Fighter App Review for BlackBerry
15 Nov 2009 | 12:14 pmRemember when video games were considered luxury items. When you had to plead and beg your parents to give you a stack of quarters and drive you to the arcade to play the latest release. Nowadays, kids beg their parents to buy them a new $60 release from the video game store. Then they play it for 10 minutes and get bored! Even more so, video games have become ultra portable. Chances are you’ll see a kid just about everywhere playing a game. We can even get games on our phones! Well, I recently found a game for BlackBerry worth checking out. Storm Fighter, by e-Mobile Software, Inc., is a… -

12 Nov 2009 | 1:24 pmAre you a small business owner that thrives on keeping your finances in order? Or maybe you’re someone who just likes knowing where their money goes? Well whatever the case, chances are one of your biggest nuisances is receipts. Nowadays, you get a receipt for pretty much everything you buy. Personally, I have a cup holder in my car full of them. Leaked pics of the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 Stratus
20 Nov 2009 | 1:31 pmGotta love Salomondrin for leaking pics of the upcoming BlackBerry Pearl 9100 aka Stratus. The 9100 is apparently a 3G Pearl for the GSM network. It has SureType, an optical trackpad, 3G, WiFi and the version we’re seeing is running OS 5.0.0.350. Too bad Sal’s YouTube was taken down by RIM legal. Those lawyers are killing the Internet, 1 leak at a time. © Kyle for BlackBerry Cool, 2009 -
Conclusions from testing the BlackBerry Bold 9700 battery
20 Nov 2009 | 4:53 amTesting the BlackBerry Bold 9700 battery has been an interesting experience. I always thought consumer electronics manufacturers embellished their battery life expectancies in order to impress the buyer. In this case, RIM has actually slightly under-stated the Bold 9700’s battery life, and really proved themselves to be an honest company when it comes to their battery life marketing. Could we say the same for Apple? I challenge TIPB to do the same with the iPhone, and see if it can play 39 hours of music off radio and last 29 hours with heavy usage. Speaking of Apple…the… -

RIM talks about security threat of DDOS attacks on carriers
19 Nov 2009 | 1:00 pmScott Totzke, RIM’s vice-president of BlackBerry security, recently spoke with the press about the potential of the DDOS attack by hackers using BlackBerry devices to target wireless networks. The thought is that because the BlackBerry is essentially a smaller PC, it could be used in a similar manner to overload networks. But is this really a big concern? I have to agree with Ronen at BerryReview, that someone stealing personal data with an application seems like a bigger concern. All you have to do is build an application that accesses user data, and sends it back to the…

20 Nov 2009 | 3:23 amIt’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the next generation BlackBerry Pearl (code-named Stratus and/or Striker). 20 Nov 2009 | 9:06 amQuite a few readers send in tips about Colorware and their uber expensive coloring customization service for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 yesterday. I am not sure how many of you are throwing down $159 for colored parts for your BlackBerry but that is way to high compared to how much the device itself costs. For example, you can pick up a leopard print housing for your 8900 for $13.99. Or a… -

AT&T, Is This The Best You Could Come Up With?
19 Nov 2009 | 5:22 amSeriously AT&T… Verizon is squarely hitting you in the mouth with their “Map for That” Ad campaign. If you are going to enter that dangerous ground of responding to your competition directly with a commercial of your own that is clearly a response to them hitting you in the mouth, you’ve got to come with something stronger than this… There is no fair fighting in marketing. When someone hits you in the mouth you hit them back in the mouth and knee them in the stomach… Unless, of course, what they are saying is essentially true… [#FAIL]…

A BlackBerry theme for every city

We discussed the total BlackBerry cost a while ago. Voice plan, messaging plan, data plan — it all adds up over two years. Earlier this year we saw a prepaid carrier, MetroPCS, launch the BlackBerry Curve 8330. The service cost $50 per month for unlimited voice and messaging, plus BIS ($60 for BES), making it cheaper than most other BlackBerry service plans. It’s attractive because there is no commitment — not in the contractual… -
Create your own themes with BlackBerry Theme Studio
19 Nov 2009 | 5:30 amAs mentioned in yesterday’s theme review post, RIM recently released BlackBerry Theme Studio, an application which allows anyone to create new BlackBerry themes. While we’ll always appreciate the work of the professional designers who create vibrant premium themes, we also know that many people have an idea for the perfect theme in their heads. I know I do. There have been a few themes that have come close to that, but none have been the perfect Joe Theme. If you’ve been longing for your own perfect theme, and you have some time on your hands, you can now give it a try. The… -
Theme Review: GreenTech, Winter Wonderland, Liquid Chrome
18 Nov 2009 | 9:04 amOver the weekend I had a big choice to make. As I mentioned Monday, I got a BlackBerry Tour on Saturday. After I set up all the technical aspects, I was left with a decision over which theme to choose. I went through a bunch of our theme reviews, and eventually cape upon something interesting. Apparently, I said that I’d load up the Aliencology theme once I got a Tour. So, true to my word, that’s what I picked. It’s just as awesome as I remembered. But, I still want to find alternatives. It’s not perfect, at least for me. I think there’s a perfect BlackBerry…

Just left verizon with new battery...
20 Nov 2009 | 3:44 pmI have had my Storm2 for about three weeks now and it has been great. Since about a week and a half ago, my battery has been draining really bad. So I thought of the usual, maybe it was an app that was draining it. So I started deleting the apps one by one, with no luck. This was over a period of a few days. Well the other day I was fed up with it, so I completely wiped my phone and reinstalled the official OS on it. I ran it for a little while with no third party apps on it and it was still draining pretty badly. I went ahead and installed QuickLaunch, and that was the only third party app… -

Seesmic Launches New Free Twitter App for Android & BlackBerry
20 Nov 2009 | 3:09 pmFor all of you tweeters out there another new Twitter client is ready for Android and BlackBerry users. Desktop client Seesmic now has a mobile app. I'm giving it a try on my Motorola Droid and it's a bit slower to load than Swift(my favorite twitter app for Android) and is having some issues with giving me someone else's avatar in my timeline but otherwise it is loaded with options and has a nice UI. I will continue to use it for a couple days and test it out. From their Android description: "Seesmic now offers the Twitter client you've been waiting for! A powerful feature-rich… -
"Not Call Log" app
20 Nov 2009 | 2:16 pmI came across this app on another forum yesterday and just wanted to pass it along. The name of the app is Not Call Log and what it does is when you end a call the app takes you back to your Home Screen so you don't end up on your Call Log screen which is what the Droid does when you hang up/end a call. This could lead to accidentally dialing someone's number and it also adds one more step in getting you back to the Home Screen. I've been using it for a day and it works great! The app is free and can be found here: http://www.androlib.com/android.appl...olog-qiEz.aspx The QR code is below:…

REVIEWS: BlackBerry Bold 9700 mobile phone
17 Nov 2009 | 4:22 amThe best BlackBerry yet? It's fair to say the BlackBerry Bold took the QWERTY market by storm. It was a badge that said you'd made it in business, as commuter trains packed full of suits flashing RIM's flagship device. The last Bold hit as the world economy slumped, so it's perhaps fitting that the new Bold trims off the fat, tightens up and is a meaner machine. The design is the biggest change you'll notice, as it steps closer to the form factor of the Curve 8900, a handset that's been incredibly popular both in business and among consumers. Touches of the old Bold are still here, not only… -

Verizon Tour OS Update Today at 5pm
19 Nov 2009 | 1:36 pmWe've just confirmed with our Verizon connect that there will in fact be an OS update for the Tour 9630. Unfortunately, it will not be the anticipated OS 5.0, but OS 4.7.1.61. For some, who are currently using a leaked OS 5.0 version, may view this as pointless. In fact, it is pointless and another reason why we have faith in what we reported about 'vendor id 501' hopefully fixing the delay in OS release time. Nevertheless, this OS should release at 5pm (10pm EST). -
