CrackBerry.com blogs28 Jan 2012 | 12:45 amDuring the first few days of Thorsten Heins taking on the position of RIM's President and Chief Executive Officer, there were a few quotes pulled from his interviews. One in particular struck a chord with many in the market and while Thorsten later went on to clarify what he meant, that wasn't the closing of the questioning. In speaking to Reuters, Heins elaborated further on the matter and took the time to note an upcoming meeting he has planned with RIM's board: "I will have time with the board in two weeks to present my ideas and changes," Heins said. Prior to today’s announcement, Mr. Heins was one of RIM’s two Chief Operating Officers and, before that, Senior Vice President for the Handheld Business Unit. He played key roles in the creation of RIM’s product portfolio. First the official word on Thorsten’s background: Mr. Heins came to RIM in December 2007 from the industrial conglomerate Siemens AG. He joined Siemens in 1984 after graduating from the University of Hannover in his native Germany. At… -

RIM’s New CEO Thorsten Heins Not A Favorite Of Investors
23 Jan 2012 | 4:37 pmMike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have stepped down as co-CEOs of Research In Motion and Thorsten Heins has been named the new CEO. While we are happy to see a potential change in attitude at the top RIM’s corporate ladder, myself and obviously investors think this is too small of a change. As of writing, RIM shares are down by about nine percent in North America at $15.52. Not the best way to start off as a new CEO, but only time will tell if this is the right choice. Hopefully Heins makes a very bold move soon and states major changes coming and shows us all a very solid and firm… -

23 Jan 2012 | 1:37 pmHow many times have you dropped your phone in water or spilled liquid on it? Those “oh sh!#” moments could be gone forever with Liquipel. It keeps the same look and feel of your device without compromising the performance. AT&T Attempts To Appease Data Users With New Data Plans
18 Jan 2012 | 4:37 pmAT&T is launching a new data plan structure this Sunday, January 22. People on unlimited plans may actually decide to bail to these news plans as AT&T crippled users devices on unlimited plans once they crossed the 2GB mark. If you want to move to one of these new plans you must make the change yourself, they are not automatic. While these plans still offer too little data for the price, AT&T has dropped the price per Gigabyte to $10 from the current Rate $12.50 per Gigabyte. We also find it fishy that AT&T claims 97% of their users use under 2GB a month but are taking… -
Hands On With the Samsung Galaxy Note
17 Jan 2012 | 6:30 pmWithout a doubt, the most advertised product at CES this year was the Samsung Galaxy Note. It seemed like every other bus on the strip or at the convention center was skinned with Note advertisement, and everywhere you turned you saw Note booths doing caricatures. It seemed a little overkill at first; advertising a 5 inch phone/tablet hybrid so heavily, especially after the poor adoption of the Dell Streak 5. However, once I made my way to the Samsung booth, which happened to be the largest in the entire show, I finally got my hands on one. Yes, it’s huge. And yes, it is also a phone. -
PowerTrekk Fuel Cell Charger Earns Our Title of “Most Disappointing CES Product That Should Have Been Amazing”
17 Jan 2012 | 5:25 pmWhen I received a press email before CES titled “CES Debut: New gadget charges your phone with water”, I was ecstatic. I imagined running away from society to live in the hills, armed with nothing but a Bear Grylls knife and my water charger. I imagined all the times I had gone through the day to end up with a dead battery, and how that would never happen again as long as I had my water charger. It immediately became the thing I was most interested in seeing in the entire show of more than 3000 companies. Who cares about new phones or cases or accessories when your phone is dead? Your…

Delivering products to market on time has never been one of Research In Motion's strong points. 5 Key Milestones of Success for the New CEO Thorsten Heins
23 Jan 2012 | 12:15 pmThe news of RIM promoting its COO Thorsten Heins to the position of CEO seems like its a good move from a shareholder perspective, but we won’t know its affect on the company for some time. Shareholders have been demanding a change in leadership for some time now, and if the Co-CEOs stepping down will instill more confidence in the company, then it had to happen sooner rather than later. We’re going to hold off on any judgements about Heins and his ability to lead until he’s had some time to get comfortable in the role. There’s a lot at stake here and the company is… -

Sprint BlackBerry Curve 9350 Review
27 Jan 2012 | 4:41 pmI have been using a Sprint BlackBerry Curve 9350 on and off for the last month or so and I have to say I really am drawn to the device. It feels like RIM finally came up with a BlackBerry Curve model that didn’t have a sacrifices like a low resolution screen or no flash. They also upped the quality of the device to the point where it feels sleek. Read on to see what I mean. On the BlackBerry Curve 9350 RIM decided to not force users to make too many compromises and actually offers benefits that even the Bold line does not have. The first thing you notice when you pick up a BlackBerry… -

BlackBerry User Base Slightly Skewed Towards Affluent & Older Crowd in the US?
27 Jan 2012 | 10:48 amComScore released an interesting new study that shows the breakdown in ages and household income in the US. They found that compared to the index BlackBerry users were about 12-20% more likely to be between 35 and 64 compared to the median smartphone user. They also found that they were 4% lower than the median in ages 13-17 and 11-17% lower in the 18-34 age space. Not huge variances but actually shows that it is not as skewed as some analysts make it sound. What is also interesting is that BlackBerry users are 2-9% more likely than than the index to be making over $75,000 in household… -
Join the Petition for Skype on the BlackBerry PlayBook
27 Jan 2012 | 9:52 amWe have seen signs pointing to Skype coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook since January of 2011. We also saw it again in April of 2011 in another leaked slide. I actually heard from a few sources that the reason it never launched was because Skype wanted RIM to pay them to bring their video chat platform to the PlayBook and RIM declined sort of like what Verizon did with Skype and BlackBerry. RIM has had an interesting relationship with Skype where they actually developed a Skype BlackBerry smartphone app that even Skype called “very efficient” and then scratched it because carriers did not… -

RIM’s roadmap for 2012 – Two BlackBerry 10 phones, two Curves, HSPA+ PlayBook
24 Jan 2012 | 11:56 amIt would appear that Research in Motions 2012 road map will consist of a couple of new BlackBerry 7 running Curves, a new PlayBook with HSPA+, and 2 new BlackBerry 10 devices, the BlackBerry London and a full QWERTY keyboard plus touch screen addition to the BlackBerry Bold line. Here’s what BGR had to say about it: RIM plans to introduce two new Curve smartphones within the next few months: the BlackBerry Curve 9230 and the BlackBerry Curve 9320. The street has been calling for a change for at the top of RIM for some time. Unfortunately, however, for Thorsten Heins, not just any ole CEO would make investors happy. Research in Motions stock (RIMM) was down almost 9% yesterday on news of the management change. RIM roadmap reveals uncertainty in BlackBerry 10
27 Jan 2012 | 6:30 amThe above tantalizing image comes courtesy of Boy Genius Report, which yesterday published leaked slides from RIM’s 2012 roadmap. We tend to get something like this around this time every year, and 2012 did not disappoint. We knew coming in that the RIM lineup would be light this year, so it was tough for the roadmap to miss expectations. As you can see from the PlayBook slide, things are actually looking nice. The new model looks to have noticeable improvements over the original. After the jump, the whole roadmap, plus some more commentary. As to the 3G+ PlayBook, it does look like a… -
Hardcore cases for your BlackBerry
26 Jan 2012 | 6:30 amWhile it’s nice to travel lightly, sometimes we need to go heavy duty. Last week we covered silicone cases for your BlackBerry, and this week we’re going in the exact opposite direction. No matter how bulky they make your smartphone, some people just need a big tough case. They might not fit in your pocket any longer, at least comfortably, but with a heavy duty case you can be sure that your BlackBerry is protected at all times. Here are a few of our favorites. Use Wifi File Transfer to shuffle files between your computer and BlackBerry
25 Jan 2012 | 6:30 amThere are plenty of ways to transfer files to and from your BlackBerry. Desktop Manager presents the most prominent option, since it’s long been the way to do it. But that means connecting via a USB cable. Ditto using the memory card as a USB mass storage drive. Not that plugging in is a huge burden, but we’re in an age where that shouldn’t be necessary. Here’s to hoping that BlackBerry 10 smartphones support wireless transfers out of the box. But for now we need an app. Wifi File Transfer handles the task with ease. The app works with both PCs and Macs, so it… -
Tips for Tuesday: Stop getting a period when you double-click the spacebar
24 Jan 2012 | 6:30 amTo many, it’s the best feature of BlackBerry typing. To get a period on your BlackBerry device, it might appear that you have to hit ALT+M. That can be a bit much, especially for longer communications. Yet most savvy BlackBerry users know that you can double click the spacebar to create a period. For many of it’s it’s wonderful. You just double click that bar and keep on typing as normal. It not only produces the period, but also capitalizes the next letter typed. Yet not everyone loves this feature. There are some people whose typing habits don’t fit with this. They…

Cook Calls Claims of Factory Worker Mistreatment "Patently False and Offens
27 Jan 2012 | 2:04 pmApple’s CEO Tim Cook recently took the time to respond to a report made by the New York Times that pointed fingers at Apple over an alleged permissiveness and indifference for workers’ conditions in China. In his email, Cook rebutted the accusations by saying “any suggestions that we don’t care is patently false and offensive to us.” For those of you who aren’t in the loop, a NYT report cited former Apple executives as making comments such as “We’ve known about labor abuses in some factories for four years, and they’re still going on. bluetooth and wireless affect on battery
27 Jan 2012 | 6:20 amI've seen the posts of the past, but haven't found any recent ones. I am wondering, with the lastest versions of bluetooth and wireless in Blackberries ( like the bold 8900 ), does it have a big affect on battery life to leave bluetooth and wireless on ? For me, I only use bluetooth when in my car. But the rest of the time is the bluetooth constantly searching and causing battery drain ? Should I turn it off and then turn it on when I get in my car ? Similar for the wifi. I only use it if I want to browse from home, or maybe a mall. Should I leave it off the rest of the time ? Thanks, Floyd

18 Jan 2012 | 7:23 amThe sad day has come unfortunately, thanks to RIM & T-mobile. :hurt: As of yesterday i am no longer using a Blackberry  I never thought this day would come coz i LOVED my berries.... BUT T-mo not carrying the phone i want, and having extremely limited models... AND... having very limited choice of FREE apps :28: just lead me to abandon them. With this, i will no longer be designing themes.... unless for some magic reason T-mo decides to get the 9860 before my contract is up for renewing in October... then i'll give them another shot. BlackBerry Bold 9790
24 Jan 2012 | 10:40 amTo boldly go where we've already been before BlackBerry is in trouble. The founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie announced they were stepping down from their CEO positions, being replaced by Thorsten Heins. Sure they might all have awesome names, but RIM's performance is far from awesome, at least when it comes to handsets.? The company continues to release hardware that's good, but never great. The PlayBook for example, its first real attempt at doing something different since the original Storm, was beautiful to hold but lacked many of the features needed to compete with other tablets. -

Samsung not interested in RIM takeover
18 Jan 2012 | 7:01 amPressure mounts on BlackBerry bosses Despite reports to the contrary, Samsung is not interested in a buyout of struggling Research in Motion; the Canadian company that makes BlackBerry devices. It was reported earlier this week that the Korean company was interested in a complete takeover of the Ontario-based business with a price between $12 billion and $15 billion being touted. This led to a surge in RIM's share price, closing at $17.47 on Wall Street on Tuesday; an 8 per cent increase. However, despite Jim Balsillie, co-CEO of the BlackBerry company, apparently "going hard after Samsung"…

Look At What RIM Plans To Launch This Year
26 Jan 2012 | 4:18 pmNo real surprises here, but BGR's Jonathan Geller got his hands on RIM's product roadmap for 2012. It's underwhelming. There's also mention of a PlayBook that can connect to HSPA networks. (That's the "4G" used by Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile.) According -
